A Green Oasis in Orange County: Fullerton Arboretum

Arboretums don’t get as much respect as they should, but in this increasingly citified world they can provide a real oasis from modern life. The Fullerton Arboretum, located on the corner of the Cal State Fullerton campus, has become a popular destination for Orange County residents to visit and relax. Taking up 26 acres of property with a wide variety of plant types, the Arboretum features four major collections to explore—a desert biome, a Mediterranean sampling, a recreation of the natural woodland areas, and a cultivated garden. Walk through the orange groves and feel free to pick fruit off of the ground and eat it—it’s a local snacking tradition. The park also encompasses the Orange County Agricultural and Nikkei Heritage Museum, where you can explore the farming history of the area with special attention to the contributions of Japanese immigrants, as well as the Heritage House, a transplanted 1890s residence that is open for tours on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 – 4 p.m.

The Bruery: Great Beer, No Matter How You Spell It

Patrick Rue started homebrewing as a diversion from his intense law school schedule, making his first batch on his stovetop. As time went by, the hobby eclipsed the profession and he decided to go into full-time microbrewing, and Orange County is a better place for it. In 2007, he opened The Bruery and quickly began to assemble a fanbase for his flavorful, unique beers. Their Orchard White, an unfiltered Belgian-style wheat beer, has won a number of awards in competition, and for good reason – after a fantastic pour comes a complex, crisp beer that, like many of Rue’s recipes, is low enough in alcohol that you can enjoy several. Like with any beers, these are best on tap, and the regular tastings held here on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are the best way to get familiar with this new craft beer powerhouse. Sticking to what they know, Rue and crew don’t serve food, but instead get some of the area’s best food trucks to park outside during tastings – pretty smart.

Muzeo: An Unusual Museum to Explore

Most museums and cultural institutions pay lip service to the communities that host them, but Anaheim’s Muzeo is a little different. It’s totally dedicated to celebrating the unique blend of cultures that characterize Southern California, from the early influence of Native Americans to the impact of immigrants from all over the world. Opened in the fall of 1997, the museum has already begun to attract a diverse clientele from all over the region, hosting three traveling exhibitions a year plus a wide variety of local artists, events, and programs. The 25,000 square foot space swallowed up the Carnegie Library—which is still operational on the grounds—and several galleries. The exhibitions that have been scheduled so far have been nothing but eclectic—live displays of exotic, colorful frogs shared floorspace with biographical tales of Delta blues legends—but visitors have all raved about the high quality of the place. Support this kind of inventiveness and pay them a visit today.

Knott’s Berry Farm: America’s First Theme Park

It’s hard to believe, but Walt Disney wasn’t the man to pioneer the theme park concept. That honor fell to Walter and Cordelia Knott, who used their Orange County property during the Depression to sell what they called the “World’s Largest Chicken Dinner.” To give customers something to do, Walter built a faux ghost town on the property, and quickly followed it up with other attractions. Now Knott’s Berry Farm boasts six areas packed with rides and entertainment, including the wildly popular Camp Snoopy. There are plenty of awesome rides for the adrenaline junkie, including the awesome wooden Ghost Rider rollercoaster, one of the largest woodies in the world. Buying online e-tickets makes Knott’s the most affordable theme park in the area, with admission at $29.99. And you can still enjoy one of Mrs. Knott’s legendary chicken dinners, but it’ll run you a little more than sixty-five cents.
